Are you a Head of Technical looking to join a growing main contractor delivering some of the UK’s most complex residential-led mixed-use developments This is an excellent opportunity for a Head of Technical to take ownership of a high-performing technical function, leading teams through both pre-construction and project delivery phases while working closely with Regional Directors to drive business performance.

Our client is a well-established main contractor with a strong pipeline of large-scale residential, build-to-rent, regeneration and mixed-use schemes across the Midlands. Due to continued growth, they are looking to appoint an experienced Head of Technical to provide strategic leadership, technical governance and operational oversight across multiple projects.

The Role

As Head of Technical, you will be office-based in the West Midlands, managing and developing a team of Technical Coordinators while ensuring projects are delivered safely, compliantly and efficiently.

Reporting directly to the Regional Directors, the Head of Technical will play a key role in shaping project delivery strategies, overseeing design management processes and ensuring the technical department supports the successful delivery of the business’s residential-led mixed-use portfolio.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead and manage the regional technical team across multiple projects.
• Oversee all technical and design management functions from pre-construction through to completion.
• Provide strategic technical leadership to Regional Directors and senior stakeholders.
• Review project risks and develop mitigation strategies during bid and pre-construction stages.
• Manage consultant appointments and external design teams.
• Ensure effective coordination between technical, commercial, planning, construction and operational teams.
• Drive programme certainty through robust design management and information flow processes.
• Support tender submissions and technical input during work-winning activities.
• Implement best practice procedures and continuous improvement initiatives across the department.
• Oversee compliance with current legislation, regulations and industry standards.
• Provide technical guidance on complex residential and mixed-use developments.
• Mentor, develop and grow technical team members.

About You

• Previous experience in a Head of Technical, Technical Director, Senior Technical Manager or similar leadership role.
• Strong background working for a main contractor delivering residential-led mixed-use developments.
• Excellent understanding of both pre-construction and project delivery processes.
• Proven ability to manage and lead technical teams.
• Strong stakeholder management and communication skills.
• Comprehensive knowledge of design management principles.
• Sound understanding of planning, design and construction processes.
• Strong knowledge and practical application of the Building Safety Act, Gateway processes and higher-risk building requirements.
• Experience working with multi-disciplinary consultant teams.
• Commercial awareness and ability to influence project outcomes.
• Professional qualification in a construction, engineering, architectural or related discipline would be advantageous.
